아이티 지진 사망 '최대 10만 명'

일(현지시간) 아이티 장 막스 벨레리브 총리는 블룸버그통신 기사에서“시민들이 미처 대피하지 못한 채 건물들이 삽시간에 붕괴하는 바람에 이번 지진으로 10만명 이상이 사망할 가능성이 크다”고 말했다.

이러한 예측대로라면 지진 사망자수는 지금까지 사상 최대치였던 1970년 페루 지진 7만명을 뛰어넘는 사상 최대 규모가 된다. 892만명으로 추산되는 아이티 인구의 11%에 해당하는 수치이기도 하다.

벨레리브 총리는 또 CNN 인터뷰에서 “아이티의 주요 거리는 어디 살았는지를 알 수 없는 수만은 사람들로 넘쳐나고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

르네 프레발 아이티 대통령은 마이애미 헤럴드와의 인터뷰에서 “리히터 규모 7.0의 지진으로 아이티가 파괴됐다”고 말했다.

현지 통신들은 아이티 수도 포르토프랭스를 비롯한 국가 전역의 건물 붕괴로 인해 시체더미가 산더미처럼 쌓여 있으며, 특히 수많은 어린이들이 학교 건물더미에 깔려 사망했거나 사망할 수 있는 상황이라고 긴급히 타전하고 있다.
